Heart Virtue - Humility

Humility isn't belittling ourselves, or making ourselves small, being compliant, or being a doormat that people can wipe their dirty boots upon.

Humility is a very powerful element of the heart.

Have you ever gazed into a star-filled night, all those little tiny pinpricks of light in a black, velvet sky and pondered the immensity of it?

It leaves you with a feeling of expansiveness, that we are connected to something that is much grander and yet here we are in this little physical body, on this little blue planet.

“The more of us that feel the universe, the better off we will be in this world.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson

The Hindus depict life as a wheel.

This wheel was created by some Infinite Intelligence and that each one of us is a spoke within this wheel, beautifully crafted and fabricated.

Not one spoke is better than another.

There is always equality and unity in this wheel.

If the spokes are missing or degraded, then the wheel will fall apart and it will have no functionality or direction.

But we as metaphorical spokes in this wheel of Life, can know and experience that we're unified as one human family, that no-one is better, stronger, more important than another, and that we are collectively moving in an unknown direction.

We do know there's movement and we, as a human 'spoke' move to the top of the wheel as it's progressing along. We can look back and see the traces of where the wheel has left an embedded mark on our past.

So in hindsight, we can see the path we have travelled.

But we honestly don't know where this wheel is heading as we can barely see the future.

We do know it's going in a direction, but to a destination unknown.

We have no idea if the wheel will come to a grinding halt, turn left, right, or go backwards!

In fact we do not have 100% certainty about what is going to happen in one day from now, or less!

This is all part of the 'great mystery' and what makes life so interesting.

Perhaps there is no actual finality?

My guess is there is no final destination.

If consciousness is infinite, then our journey too, just keeps going.

This is humility.

When we are humble, we can see ourselves as part of the collective, and what we are doing is important,
but not more important or better
than anyone else.

We've had some very humble people in our world to show us this beautiful quality.

Mahatma Gandhi, for instance, influenced 140 million people.

His philosophies and practices remain prevalent and are still important today.

And yet he wore a homespun dhoti, arrived at number 10 Downing Street in England, the colonisers of India, with a wooden stick, his signature glasses and sandals.

This is humility and when we can be humble, we are without ego.

Enjoy this journey of humility, it is one of the heart virtues and it is an act of love to be humble.

It's an act of love to be able to forgive somebody, to be compassionate.

It speaks of of love towards ourselves and others.

It's a humbling experience, to release ourselves from the pain of the past, to be compassionate, to be appreciative, to be understanding, and to be forgiving.

These heart virtues, when expressed, are all love in action.

Enjoy giving and receiving them, you deserve it!

"I am HUMBLE enough to know I am not better than anybody, and WISE enough to know I am DIFFERENT from the rest."
